  2. Texas apprentice license
  3. First year as an apprentice
  4. Log supervised hours
  5. Texas journeyman exam
  6. Journeyman license and reciprocity

Save your route and track your progress

Short answer: Apply online through the form linked from TDLR’s official Electrical Apprentice application page. No previous electrical experience or licensing exam is required. The page checked October 11, 2026 listed a nonrefundable US$20 fee under the term "renewal fee," so confirm the application type and amount in the official system before you pay. Online applicants reporting no criminal convictions may receive a temporary license automatically, subject to TDLR’s conditions; that alone does not show your own license was issued. TDLR does not publish one standard processing time.

Launch price through November 30, 2026. The kit organizes 13 Texas programs, 29 Houston contractors, six practice tests and 20 interview answers.

Choose your learning step after the application. Use this application guide for the license paperwork. Keep the apprentice renewal guide for the next license-maintenance question. For optional ongoing learning, compare the current paid ET Member plans and billing terms.

Confirm that this is the correct license

An Electrical Apprentice license is the entry credential for a person performing electrical work under the supervision TDLR describes. The official page says no experience is required and there is no examination for this license. That makes the application simpler than a Journeyman application, but it does not authorize unsupervised electrical work.

Before opening the form, distinguish the state license from admission to an apprenticeship program. TDLR can issue an apprentice license without placing you with an employer, assigning work, enrolling you in school or admitting you to a union or nonunion program. Those are separate steps.

Also confirm that you need Electrical Apprentice rather than Electrical Sign Apprentice or another category. Choosing the wrong license type can create delay and does not solve the underlying work authorization question.

Electrical Apprentice or Electrical Sign Apprentice?

TDLR issues these as two separate apprentice licenses, each with its own online application. Both official pages list no experience requirement, no exam, a published $20 fee and annual renewal. TDLR also describes a temporary-license condition for online applicants who report no criminal convictions. The work categories and supervision differ; later Journeyman applications have separate experience and verification requirements.

Electrical ApprenticeElectrical Sign Apprentice
Work coveredElectrical workElectrical sign work
Supervision (TDLR wording)General supervision of a Master Electrician, Journeyman Electrician or Residential WiremanOn-site supervision of a Master Electrician, Master Sign Electrician or Journeyman Sign Electrician
Later Journeyman requirements (check separately)Journeyman Electrician: exam after at least 7,000 hours and license at 8,000 hours under a Texas Master ElectricianJourneyman Sign Electrician: 8,000 hours under a Texas Master or Master Sign Electrician; first application by mail with a $30 fee
To apply for the apprentice licenseNo experience, no exam, $20No experience, no exam, $20

One point matters if you start in a sign shop and later want general electrical work. On its Journeyman Electrician page, TDLR asks each Master Electrician who supervised you to verify your hours, and Master Sign Electricians are not on that list. Before counting sign-shop hours toward Journeyman Electrician, ask TDLR how those hours would be verified; we have not found an official answer that covers it.

Quick check before you pay (illustrative):

  • The job is building, installing or servicing electric signs or outline lighting, and your supervisor holds a sign license: ask the employer whether they expect the Electrical Sign Apprentice license.
  • You plan to work toward Journeyman Electrician: confirm the apprentice category with the employer and check TDLR’s separate experience-verification rules before planning how to document hours.
  • You are not sure yet: ask the employer or training program which license they expect before you submit; each license has its own application and fee.

Illustrative example, not a real person: a newcomer is offered a helper job with a company that builds LED storefront signs, and the crew lead is a Journeyman Sign Electrician. In TDLR’s wording, a Journeyman Sign Electrician can supervise an Electrical Sign Apprentice on site, but is not on the supervisor list for an Electrical Apprentice. So the newcomer asks the employer which license fits the job before paying the $20 fee.

Apply online step by step

  1. Open the official TDLR page titled Apply for a New Electrical Apprentice License.
  2. Read the current experience, examination, application and criminal history sections.
  3. Follow the online application link from that page rather than a link supplied in an advertisement.
  4. Select the Electrical Apprentice license type and enter your identity and contact information exactly.
  5. Answer every criminal history question accurately. Prepare a separate Criminal History Questionnaire for each event when the instructions require one.
  6. Review the entries before paying. Correct typographical errors while the form is still open.
  7. Confirm the correct application type and fee in the official system before paying. Do not infer a first-time application charge solely from the page’s renewal-fee wording.
  8. Save the confirmation, payment receipt and any temporary license record displayed or delivered.
  9. Use TDLR Active License Search to verify the active record before relying on the license at work.

If the online system is down, try again later or contact TDLR. Do not submit repeated applications simply because the first result is not immediately visible. First check the confirmation and ask TDLR to locate the existing submission.

What the temporary license means

The official page checked October 11, 2026 describes automatic temporary issuance for apprentice applicants who register online and report no criminal convictions. Read this within the official eligibility conditions. It does not establish that every online applicant qualifies or that an individual license has actually been issued. Confirm your own issued record with TDLR before relying on it for work authorization.

Save the temporary license issued through TDLR’s online process and review its stated validity and conditions. Use TDLR’s Active License Search to check for an active license record. If the temporary license or search result is unclear, contact TDLR before relying on it for work authorization. A temporary license does not change the supervision requirement. It also does not enroll the holder in a training program, create an employment relationship or establish future qualifying experience by itself.

Applicants who report criminal history may require review rather than automatic temporary issuance. TDLR says that review can take one to six weeks depending on the history. Do not hide an event to obtain the automated path. The agency conducts background checks on original and renewal applications.

How long does the application take?

TDLR does not publish one universal processing time on the apprentice application page. Use three different expectations:

Application situationOfficial informationPlanning assumption
Online with no reported criminal convictionsAutomatic temporary issuance described for the eligible online groupConfirm the official conditions and your own issued record; save it and verify the active record
Reportable criminal historyReview can take one to six weeksSubmit complete questionnaires and allow review time
Missing or mismatched informationNo fixed public time is statedRespond to TDLR and track the existing submission

The lack of one universal processing time is important. Do not turn another applicant’s same day result into a promised deadline for your case. Completeness, identity matching and criminal history review can change the route.

If your application appears stuck

Begin with your own records. Confirm the submission date, license type, name used, email address, fee receipt and any reference number. Then search only for your own active license record. A blank active search does not explain why the application is pending because that tool covers active licenses, not a complete application status history.

Contact the TDLR Electricians Program when the record cannot be located or the agency has asked for more information. The official page lists the in state number 800 803 9202, the general number 512 463 6599 and the Electricians Program mailing address at PO Box 12157, Austin, Texas 78711. Use the current contact details on the official page in case they change.

When contacting TDLR, provide only the information the agency needs to locate your submission. Ask a specific question, such as whether the application was received, whether an item is missing or whether the temporary license was issued. Keep the response with your application records.

If criminal history review applies, make sure every required questionnaire was included. TDLR says one questionnaire is needed for each felony, misdemeanor other than a minor traffic violation, or guilty or no contest plea resulting in deferred adjudication. Use the official instructions to determine disclosure duties.

What to do after the license appears

The first week should be used to separate the state credential from work and training records.

Day one taskWhy it matters
Read the license recordConfirms the name, type, number and expiration date
Save a copyGives you a personal record if an employer requests it
Mark the renewal dateThe license lasts one year and renews annually
Verify the employer or contractorA personal apprentice license is not a business contractor license
Confirm supervisionElectrical Apprentice work requires the supervision described by TDLR
Start an hour logYour log organizes records but does not replace employer verification
Review program requirementsA school or apprenticeship program can impose separate enrollment rules

Give an employer the credential information it legitimately needs, but do not treat a hiring request as proof that the business is properly licensed. Verify the company credential separately through TDLR.

Keep a personal record of your work dates, employer, duties and supervising license holder. This can help you organize your experience, but it does not establish qualifying hours or replace the experience verification documents TDLR may require for a later license application.

Keep license paperwork separate from employment verification

Your apprentice-license application and an employer’s Form I-9 process are separate tasks. A license card does not by itself establish authorization to work in the United States.

For Form I-9, use the current USCIS instructions and Lists of Acceptable Documents. You choose an acceptable List A document or an acceptable combination from Lists B and C, subject to the official instructions. An employer cannot require a particular document from those lists.

Make a private checklist with document category, whether the original is available, any relevant expiration date, and the employer’s secure submission instructions. Do not upload identity numbers or document images to a public study log, comment, or shared worksheet. Record only application milestones in ordinary study notes: sent, receipt received, correction requested, and result checked.

If you need advice about your own immigration circumstances, use an appropriately qualified adviser. This checklist does not decide anyone’s employment eligibility.

Hiring-document practice

  1. TX-017: Does obtaining an apprentice license replace Form I-9 verification?
Answer: No. Licensing and employment eligibility verification are separate processes.
  2. TX-017: Must every employee provide a passport for Form I-9?
Answer: No. Employees choose from the acceptable document options under USCIS instructions.
  3. TX-017: What belongs in a shared study checklist: a document number or a milestone such as receipt received?
Answer: Only the milestone. Keep sensitive identity documents in the appropriate private process.

Common application mistakes

Using a third party page instead of entering through TDLR creates unnecessary identity and fee risk. Selecting the wrong apprentice category can produce a record that does not match the work. An inconsistent name can make later searches harder. Failing to save the receipt leaves little information for a status inquiry.

The most serious mistake is treating the lack of an experience or exam requirement as permission to work alone. The apprentice license exists within a supervision structure. Confirm who provides supervision and under which contractor or governmental entity the work is performed.

Another mistake is combining program admission with state licensing. A program may have an aptitude test, interview, application window, school records or employer sponsorship requirement. TDLR’s apprentice license does not waive those requirements.

Start with the Texas apprentice license guide and Texas career route. Then use Texas electrician apprenticeship programs to compare programs and Texas apprenticeship application dates to track application windows.

If the target program requires an aptitude test, use the aptitude and interview kit only after confirming the exact test.

Use the current official paper form and instructions. Keep a saved receipt separate from a license result. A completed planning record does not submit an application.

Criminal-history preparation questions

Use the current official application instructions to decide what information the agency requests. The examples below show how to record an unresolved question, not how TDLR will decide an individual application. Keep history details and attachments private.

  • Fictional example: An applicant is unsure whether an older event belongs in the current criminal-history answer. Preparation note: Ask TDLR which question and attachment instructions apply; answer and attachments unverified. The applicant checks the official instructions and asks TDLR before choosing an answer. The event’s age alone is not used to choose an answer.
  • Fictional example: An applicant has two events to review. They check the official questionnaire instructions for each event and keep a separate private attachment-status line for each. Questionnaire ready records preparation only; it does not mean submitted, accepted or approved.
  • Fictional example: An applicant receives a request for more information. They save the request privately, record what the agency asked for and keep the application result unresolved until it can be verified. A saved payment receipt is not treated as an issued license.
